Common injuries to avoid this holiday season

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt.

You may have your own ‘Christmas Story’ of a time something went very, very wrong, and you’ve probably learned some good lessons.

Health experts from Mayo Clinic say there are some common injuries they see during this festive season.

Injuries from knives are a popular one – like the time your partner tried to show off their not-so-impressive cooking skills and ended up in the hospital with a gash.

Or maybe while the adults were chatting, you looked over and saw one of the kiddos doing something suspicious…

“There are all sorts of fun decorations around the house that kids are not always used to having around. We’ll see kids swallowing small Christmas tree ornaments, new toys – particularly with button batteries – which are very dangerous for kids if they were to swallow them, or fun foods laying around that we don’t want them to get into,” said Jodie Diemer, MD, Mayo Clinic Health System Family Medicine.

She also said watch out for wrapping paper laying around – it’s more slippery than you may think and has even led to some hospital visits.
