‘Coins for Canines’ raises money to help LCPD K9 unit

Event aims to purchase 3 K9 vests for department

A fundraiser at Valley View mall in Onalaska is looking to help keep the La Crosse Police Department’s cuddly companions safe.

The ‘Coins for Canines’ event collected money for the department’s K9 unit, which is funded solely on donations. Organizers are aiming to raise $3,600 for 3 vests for the dogs.

One officer says the unit’s K9’s are incredibly helpful, and protecting them can make them even more effective.

“If there’s going to be a building search or a barricaded subject and we send the dog in, that dog is going to be the first person who can take the knife stab or he could take the gunshot, and by affording any kind of protection that we can give them, it’s going to be a great benefit to the dog,” said La Crosse Police Department K9 Supervisor Sergeant Jon Wenger.

If you weren’t able to make it out to Saturday’s event but still want to donate head over to their GoFundMe page.
