Coffee & Conversation: Providing parents with answers to their vexing questions

How do you manage your child's anxiety?

A new program in our area is bringing experts to the table to answer some of the most challenging health issues children are facing today.

Coffee & Conversation provides a format for parents to ask health experts about raising their kids.

The new program is a partnership between Mayo Clinic Health System and Misty’s Dance Unlimited in Onalaska.

Every other month the forum will tackle a different topic related to issues that kids face in our current environment, and today 1 in every 12 children are being affected by anxiety disorders.

That’s why November’s upcoming topic covers managing anxiety with your children.

Child & Adolescent Clinical Therapist with Mayo Clinic Health System, Janice Schreier, will be one of the panel’s experts, and she says anxiety in children is actually very common.

“It’s one of the top conditions that we see in children,” Schreier says. “It’s not just in a behavioral health setting, but you see it in a medical setting too with kids having increased rates of headaches and stomach aches. There’s a lot of stressors on our society right now that increases anxiety in kids.”

Organizers hope this month’s topic on anxiety can better equip the community to raise healthy children, and remind parents they are not alone.

For parents looking to attend, Coffee & Conversation is designed to make sure you have easy access to being a part of these forums.

“Everything is free and it’s open to the community,” says Misty Lown, Owner of Misty’s Dance Unlimited, the organization that will be hosting each forum.

“Additionally we have childcare activities available so parents can really focus on the topic at hand. There’s no advanced registration required. We really just want the families in our community to come out and be a part of this important conversation,” Lown says.

Coffee & Conversation’s first forum will take place this Saturday, November 9, at Misty’s Dance unlimited in Onalaska from 10 am-11 am.
