Clinical trials start to combat childhood neuroblastoma
Researchers are investigating the combination of targeted therapy with immunotherapy to treat the children
MADISON, Wis (WKBT) – The first in human clinical trial to treat children with relapsed neuroblastoma is opening at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison.
The trial is being conducted by researchers from the UW Madison School of Medicine and Public Health.
Researchers are investigating the combination of targeted therapy with immunotherapy to treat the children.
They’re testing using an antibody that recognizes neuroblastoma and focuses the patients’ immune system on the cancer.
A drug is administered in order to prevent the tumor from shielding itself against the immunologic attack, thereby increasing the number of cancer cells killed by the immune system and improving the possibility of benefit.
