Clearing snow from storm drains may help reduce street flooding

Snow covered storm drains can create issues for drivers.

As snow melts, or we get rain like we did on Saturday, it pools on roads if drains are blocked by snow.

There are more than 6,000 storm drains in La Crosse.

That is why the city’s water utility department is asking for the public’s assistance.

“Right now the biggest problem is we don’t have any place to put the snow that we take out. If we can just scoop that snow and set it aside, we can get to a lot more of these drains. Right now, we’re actually loading it and having to haul it away in a dump truck and that take a lot longer,” said Bernard Lenz, City of La Crosse utility manager.

People are reminded to be safe while shoveling on or near city streets.
