City road work, railroad crossing maintenance to affect several La Crosse streets
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — City street work and Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad crossing maintenance will result in several temporary street closures in La Crosse in coming weeks.
Road maintenance will begin Tuesday on George Street between Gillette Street and Cunningham Street. Weather permitting, contractors plan to have work completed by the end of the week.
Also Tuesday, Second Street in downtown La Crosse will be closed temporarily from Jay Street to Pearl Street. The closure is necessary to facilitate road reconstruction near the La Crosse Center.
In early August, another stage of the road project will close Second Street through the Main Street intersection, up to the south side of State Street. Access then will be restored at Jay and Pearl.
Pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained throughout the project, and the signalized intersection at State will remain open during the project.
Vehicular access is expected to be reopened by Labor Day weekend, although some related construction may continue into mid-September.
The BNSF maintenance projects will involve four crossings in the city: Main Street, Cass Street, Farnam Street and 33rd Street. BNSF tie gangs will be removing and installing new ties.
The crossings on Main, Cass and Farnam will be closed intermittently between July 8 and 12, and they will not all be closed at the same time, according to a BNSF news release. No official detours will be posted for these crossings.
The 33rd Street crossing is expected to occur between July 12 and 14. The emergency bridge over Pammel Creek will be opened for local use only, by Rivercrest Village.
