City of La Crosse planning for affordable housing at River Point District

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — A developer wants to build more affordable housing in the City of La Crosse.

For the past few months, the Economic Development Commission has been planning for the River Point District.

That’s the area of land directly across from Festival Foods on Copeland Avenue.

On Tuesday, the commission heard from the developer of the proposed Driftless Apartments.

The apartments will rent at no more than 30% of the tenant’s income.

The commission did not vote on the plan, so a final decision has not been made.

However, La Crosse Mayor Mitch Reynolds says that no matter what happens, he’s excited about the River Point District’s future.

“It creates essentially an entire new neighborhood for the City of La Crosse,” said Reynolds. “It’s incredible that we are at this point finally where we can start building things there and I couldn’t be more excited.”

Reynolds says the city expects to start work–either on infrastructure or the apartment project–next year.
