City of La Crosse has winter trail options for hikers, bikers

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Despite cold temperatures and snow, La Crosse’s trails are busy.

The river marsh trails are a good spot for hikers who want a flat walk.

The trails near Forest Hills Golf Course are groomed for cross-country skiers.

If you want more of a challenge, Hixon and Upper Hixon trails are groomed for fat-tire bikes.

La Crosse’s Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department recommends hikers wear snowshoes while they’re out on trails.

“Depending on where the sun hits and the shade, it can be very icy at times and the snow can be very deep as well, so for user safety … we would encourage the use of snowshoes,” says Leah Miller, the outdoor recreation coordinator for the City of La Crosse.

There are downloadable maps on the city’s website, as well as an app you can use on your smartphone.
