City of La Crosse announces Jeffrey Schott as new fire chief

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — The City of La Crosse Police and Fire Commission announced their official selection for the new fire chief Friday.

Jeffrey Schott — currently serving as the Interim Assistant Fire Chief-Fire Rescue Operations — will take on the role of fire chief on August 19. Schott was chosen out of four candidates.

Schott is a 1997 graduate of University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire with a major in Criminal Justice and a 1999 Honor Graduate of the Louis Garland Fire Academy in San Angelo, TX. From 1999- 2007, he served in the Minnesota Air National Guard as a Staff Sergeant and Firefighter. In 1999, he began his career in emergency services with the Washburn Wisconsin Fire and Ambulance Departments as a volunteer Firefighter/EMT. In November of 2000, he was hired full-time with the City of La Crosse as a firefighter. Schott has worked as an EMS Trainer, Lieutenant, Captain, and is a certified Hazmat Technician and former Hazmat Team Leader. He was promoted to Battalion Chief in 2018 and became the Interim Assistant Chief in April of this year.

Schott is married to Captain Avrie Schott with the City of La Crosse Police Department. They have three children and reside in La Crosse.

Schott’s appointment will be confirmed at the Police and Fire Commission’s August 17 meeting at 9:30 a.m.
