Chloe Hughes, Bella Iverson-Jones to represent Winona gymnastics at Class A state meet

Winona gymnastics is sending two gymnasts to the Class A state gymnastics meet this weekend.

Junior Chloe Hughes and senior Bella Iverson-Jones will represent the co-op team at the University of Minnesota.

Hughes will compete at state for the third time, and is coming off a section meet in which she set a Section 1A record with a 9.775 on vault. For Iverson-Jones, who’s participating in her only year of varsity gymnastics, just reaching state has been a dream come true.

“I was like senior year I want to make it, and my mom made a bet with me, and I was like, ‘I’m going to do it.’ I was so happy to make it,” Iverson-Jones said.

Iverson-Jones will compete in vault, bars and beam on Saturday.

Hughes is entering her third Class A state meet, having gone her eighth grade and sophomore years. Hughes competed in the all-around last year, but she said nerves got to her and resulted in her finishing 23rd.

“I think this year I’ve worked on being more positive and trying not to be so stressed, to where it shows in the competition,” Hughes said. “I’m hoping to have my best floor of the year [on Saturday.] I I don’t think I’ve had my floor [yet].”

Hughes will once again compete in the all-around.

The two athletes begin competition Saturday at 11 a.m. at Roy Wilkins Auditorium, the home of 7th-ranked Minnesota Gopher gymnastics, who are led by former Winhawk Lexy Rambler.

Hughes and Iverson-Jones will be in the first rotation on the beam.
