Child abuse prevention month walk brings together family for final event

Families in La Crosse spent Saturday afternoon simply walking together as a part of Child Abuse Prevention Awareness month. The Family Fun Walk is a free event to bring families together and receive support if they need extra help.

During the event, people walked a one-mile route around Myrick Park. After the walk, children had their faces painted and played with therapy dogs.

Organizers with the Coulee Region Child Abuse Prevention Task Force said all it can take is one person to ask if a parent is struggling to help them avoid mistreating their child.

“If we can create free events for families to come to, at least we know during those moments, children are not maltreated. And if we can be a part of creating moments where children aren’t maltreated, that’s what everyone can do in our community,” said Nicole Milliren, chair for the Coulee Region Child Abuse Prevention Task Force.

Millren said there are more than 1,600 cases of suspected child abuse reported to the la Crosse County Human Services department each year.

The walk was the last event organized by the task force for the month.
