Cheers! It’s a beer ‘can’niversary.

Jan. 24 is the anniversary of the first beer sold in a can

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Call it a ‘can’niversary.

On this day in 1935, the first canned beer went on sale in Virginia.

You’ve likely heard of the World’s Largest Six Pack, six giant tanks at City Brewery made up to look like beer cans.

They’ve been a part of La Crosse’s brewing history since 1969.

But it’s not just the big cans that are popular.

Staff at Pearl Street Brewery say they started canning about two years ago.

While craft brewers had focused on bottles in the past, the switch has a lot of benefits.

“It’s a little bit more sustainable packaging. And it’s lighter. And they take your beer, it ages really well in a can,” said Pearl Street Brewery owner Joe Katchever.

You can expect that trend to continue

Pearl Street sells 13 varieties in a can.
