Car vs. Amish buggy accident injures horse, 2 people

A car vs. Amish horse and buggy accident injured the horse and two people in the buggy early Tuesday morning.

According to Vernon County Sheriff John Spears, Cheryl Proctor, 62, of rural Genoa, was traveling southbound on County Road O. Samual Miller, 34, and Daniel Mast, 17, both of Genoa, were riding in an Amish buggy traveling in the same direction.

Proctor reported the sun was directly in her eyes and she did not see the Amish buggy. When she did finally see the buggy, Proctor swerved but struck the buggy, detaching it from the horse.

The horse was cut in a hind leg and is expected to make a full recovery, authorities said.

Miller and Mast were thrown from the buggy and were taken to an area hospital.

Proctor was uninjured in the crash.

Genoa Fire Department, Genoa First Responders and Tri-State Ambulance assisted the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office at the scene.

The incident is still under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
