LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Another debate is giving voters in our area a chance to learn about local candidates.

Republican incumbent Loren Oldenburg and Democratic challenger Josefine Jaynes met for a debate Friday morning.

They are running for the 96th assembly seat which includes parts of Monroe, Vernon and Crawford Counties.

Oldenburg is seeking his second term serving the district.

He says business owners should be in control their efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19.

“Businesses have followed the mask requirements, the CDC guidelines and done an excellent job. And we have to rely on the people doing the best for themselves,” said 96th Assembly district representative Loren Oldenburg.

Democratic challenger Josefine Jaynes says changing regulations are making things difficult for business owners.

“Our small businesses could have been on the road to recovery. Instead, they’re still waiting to see which regulation is going to change today. You know, they have to continue adapting. And we’re so lucky in this district to have great small businesses that have really adapted,” said 96th assembly district candidate Josefine Jaynes.

Friday’s debate part of an on-going series leading up to election day.

Coming up on Tuesday, candidates for the 32nd Wisconsin Senate race will face off.
