Brookwood coach named Packers HS Coach of the Week

Doug Brieske, Brookwood High School’s head football coach has been named the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week.

In addition to the recognition, the school’s football program will receive  a $1,000 donation from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL.

Brieske is in his 10th season as the high school’s head football coach, 11th with the Brookwood program. He’s also the school’s physical education teacher. On Friday, he led his team to a 27-7 victory over Iowa-Grant to advance to the third level of the Division 6 WIAA State Tournament. The win marked Brookwood’s first second-round playoff victory and 10-win season in school history.

“This season we have a tremendous group of seniors,” Brieske said. “They have unbelievable leadership skills and they play for each other, not themselves.”

Brieske is a Tomah native who played defensive tackle and fullback in high school. He played defensive tackle for North Dakota State University. He began his coaching career in 1992 as a student assistant at North Dakota State. After graduating, he coached high school basketball in western North Dakota before accepting an assistant football coaching at Brookwood in 2001.

Brookwood will play against No. 1-ranked Darlington on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Darlington High School.
