Boys and Girls Club hosts youth fine arts concert in La Crosse

Guitar Academy volunteers instruct free concert

Guitars and vocals were filling the Viterbo Arts Center on Wednesday with a Boys and Girls Club-La Crosse Spring Fine Arts Concert.

Over 30 youth performed with more than 20 volunteer instructors.

The club is able to offer 4 levels of guitar instruction over a period of ten weeks. Local musicians volunteer their time to teach the youth under a program called Guitar Academy.

The concert conisted of 10 songs, varying from Taylor Swift to Bob Marley.

Volunteer Program Coordinators, Andy and Peter Hughes, say “It’s more than about guitar” they explain, “It’s about building relationships with the kids with adults and role models. It’s about having fun, it’s about their self-esteem, how they accomplish something they maybe didn’t know theycould do. Most of these kids have never played a guitar and we find some kids that are unbelievably blessed with talent”

This is the 5th year that Guitar Academy has been volunteering to teach local youth guitars and vocals.
