Both local health systems haven’t seen any influenza cases this year
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- One of the positives that has come out of the pandemic is the lack of influenza cases.
Both Mayo Clinic and Gundersen Health Systems haven’t had any cases so far this year.
Typically, they would’ve seen hundreds of cases by this time.
Health experts say the most likely reason is because of the precautions being taken to prevent the spread of COVID, including wearing masks and social distancing.
But doctors warn just because there hasn’t been any cases yet, doesn’t mean we won’t still see an outbreak.
“I think it will be interesting to see if we see a later flu season this year as we don’t necessarily have the same heard immunity from it going around and that kind of thing that we might’ve seen in previous years around this time of year,” said Dr. Joel Greenya of Mayo Clinic Health System.
Doctor Greenya says the lack of flu cases also does not necessarily signal anything positive for future years.
