ONALASKA, Wis. (WKBT) – Onalaska Police launched an investigation Sunday after a body was found just before 10 a.m. near Highway 53, off of the southbound on-ramp near Sand Lake Road.
Onalaska Police officials say two people, who were cleaning up trash along Highway 53, said they saw what they believed to be human remains along the west side embankment, just south of Sand Lake Road.
Officers at the scene confirmed the remains appeared to be human. It also appeared the remains had been at that location for a period of time according to officials.
Additional state agencies are assisting with the investigation. The Wisconsin State Patrol and Department of Justice’s Crime Scene Response Team responded and are actively assisting Onalaska Officers with processing the scene. The La Crosse County Medical Examiner’s Office is also on scene assisting.
Officials say the identity of the remains is unknown and may take several weeks or longer to make a positive identification.
In a note to drivers, the Highway 53 southbound on-ramp from Sand Lake Road will likely be closed for several more hours.
An official with Onalaska Police said there is no danger to the public.
