Boat safety reminders ahead of Independence Day
Boating while drunk can lead to fines or jail time
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The Independence Day weekend is a popular time for people to get outside.
But, while you might be having fun, La Crosse Police want to remind that drinking and boating can be dangerous.
All throughout our area, boat drivers have a blood alcohol limit of .08, just like behind the wheel of a car.
Fines, jail time and even loss of boating privileges could follow for those who do not follow the law.
“The biggest risk is the risk of a crash. That’s certainly the biggest thing we’re trying to avoid is having anybody get unnecessarily injured while they’re out on the river. Not only a crash, but accidental drowning,” said La Crosse Police Sgt. Tom Walsh.
Boaters are also reminded to have life jackets for each person.
And let others know when you plan on being on and off the water.
