Blood supply reaching dangerously low levels in La Crosse

Donated blood is needed during planned surgeries and emergencies.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Gundersen Health System says its hospitals desperately need blood.

Donated blood is needed during planned surgeries and emergencies.

Gundersen works with Versiti Blood Center.

But supplies are not where health leaders say they need to be.

“The margin between what they collect and what we need is so narrow that we can’t even get through a bad snowstorm without worrying about running out of blood,” said Gundersen Health System’s Dr. Wayne Bottner.

Gundersen staff are helping meet the need.

Employees on the La Crosse campus participated in a donation drive Thursday.

That drive continues Friday.

There will be a drive February 8th at Gundersen Health System’s Sparta clinic.

You can find more donation opportunities on the Versiti website.
