Bill would raise physical education requirement

A Green Bay legislator is drafting a bill that would raise physical education requirements for younger Wisconsin students.

The legislation in the works by Republican Rep. Chad Weininger would add 30 to 45 minutes of physical activity for kindergarten through eighth grade if students are not enrolled in a gym class.

Currently, kindergarten through sixth-grade students have physical education classes three times a week. Seventh- and eighth-graders have class once a week.

Weininger says society has changed and the current requirement isn’t working. He cites the state Department of Health Services statistic which says one in four Wisconsin high school students is overweight or obese.

Weininger tells the State Journal he hopes to have the bill ready in time for next school year.
