Big Brothers Big Sisters 7 Rivers Region teaches kids welding and self-worth

Western Technical College hosted pairs of Bigs and Littles Saturday in their manufacturing department as they learned about welding from a welding instructor and his students.

The pairs worked on projects like making the Big Brothers Big Sisters emblem and 3D puzzles of things like robots and butterflies. They also learned about the importance of education and developing personal skills.

“The challenges you encounter when learning to weld or putting a 3D puzzle together, which is a pretty unusual project, you have your mentor right there to work with you through that. So, it’s really helping build some of the self-efficacy and control that we know is so needed in our youth today,” said Jason Larsen, the executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters 7 River Region.

With National Women’s Month coming up, Big Sisters and their Littles were especially encouraged to come to Saturday’s event to help increase awareness of women in STEM fields.
