Big Blue Dragon Boat Festival comes to a close

More than 100 breast cancer survivors took part in this year's Dragon Boat races

The Big Blue Dragon Boat Festival has come to an end after a weekend of fun and competition.

Thousands of people came out to show support for victims of breast cancer and to enjoy the festivities.

The Dragon Boat races have always been popular in our area, but this is the first year with its own festival.

More than 100 breast cancer survivors took part in this year’s Dragon Boat races, with more than 50 teams competing. One breast cancer survivor says that creating a community of survivors makes for a great support network.

“This is great because it brings the community out and it shows that there is support and there is hope and everyone is having a good time and it’s for a good cause,” said breast cancer survivor Deborah Koenig.

Funds raised at the event will go to Mayo Clinic Health System’s programs for breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
