Bergstrom ready to take reigns of Winona State Football program
WINONA, Minn. (WKBT)–A new era of football at Winona State has begun, as the Warriors officially introduce new head coach Brian Bergstrom.
Bergstrom earned his stripes as a defensive coordinator at FCS program South Dakota State.
A native Minnesotan, he’s coached in programs throughout the Midwest including Augustana before this chance in Winona.
He knows he’s got big shoes to fill stepping in for Tom Sawyer, but says that he’s inheriting a great foundation.
“We had to find ways to go from something really really really good and make it great and go from great to elite,” Bergstrom told media at an introductory press event.
“That foundation is critical, it’s certainly not broken, we’re looking at coming in ways to refine and continue to get better, and build off the momentum.”
Bergstrom also commented on the legacy Tom Sawyer left behind.
“He as well as everyone else in this community have been so supportive, and willing to help and excited to move forward.”
Bergstrom succeeds the now-retired Sawyer, who had almost 200 wins in 25 years with the Warriors, including six playoff appearances.
