Beach safety reminders ahead of expected increase of visitors
Reminder comes after young swimmer had to be rescued from the Mississippi River in La Crosse
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The hot temperatures are making La Crosse’s public beaches a popular place to be.
Parks and Rec officials in the city are keeping the beaches open.
But as a reminder, there is no life guard on duty at the beaches.
Just last week, a young swimmer was rescued from the Mississippi River near the La Crosse’s downtown.
While there are often people around, swimmers need to be aware of their surroundings.
“Be mindful that this is the river and that the water level changes very frequently. And this is a heavy traffic area with barges,” said La Crosse Parks and Rec Outdoor recreation coordinator Leah Burns.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials are recommending, but not requiring, keeping groups small.
