Authorities investigate drowning near Latsch Island in Winona

WINONA, Minn. (WKBT)- One person is dead after drowning in the Mississippi River Thursday afternoon in Winona.

Rescue crews were called to the area of Latsch Island around 4 p.m.

According to Winona Co. Sheriff Ron Ganrude, the young man and four others jumped off a bridge into the Mississippi River.

According to witnesses, the sheriff says he was the last to jump.  He was attempting to swim back to shore when others saw him begin to struggle. He then went under and never resurfaced.

Sheriff Ganrude says about a half hour passed between the time of the call and when he was pulled from the water. Crews worked on him for another half hour before he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
