Ashley furloughs ‘small portion’ of workforce because of COVID-19 effects on business

Ashley Furniture, headquartered in Arcadia, has a global network.

ARCADIA, Wis. (WKBT) – Ashley Furniture Industries in Arcadia cited the serious impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and uncertain future in laying off Friday what it described as a “small portion,” but unspecified, number of workers.

Because of coronavirus’s “significant and recent unforeseeable impact on the economy and our business, Ashley Furniture Industries in Arcadia has implemented a furlough policy for a small portion of the workforce,” a company spokesman said Friday.

“This policy is intended to bridge our impacted employees pending their return to work in Arcadia,” he said. “Ashley has provided monetary relief, access to paid-time-off, and continued enrollment in associate benefit plans.”

The Arcadia-based company, which has plants and stores throughout the United States and the world, hopes that the program, “coupled with access to government-led initiatives, will help bridge those associates during this ordeal,” the spokesman said. “It is Ashley’s full intention to bring these employees back as soon as practicable when the pandemic subsides.”

The company has more than 600 Ashley HomeStore and 15 manufacturing and distribution facilities around the world, according to its website. More than 6,000 retail partners with more than 20,000 storefronts sell Ashley products in 123 countries. As of 2017, it had more than 23,000 employees worldwide.
