Army Reserve soldiers have special holiday meal before deployment

Before a company of soldiers with the Army Reserve deploys, its members are getting a special holiday meal with their families.

The 327th Engineer Company, based in Onalaska, Wisconsin, is deploying this spring. They’re headed overseas and will not be home for the holidays for quite some time.

But thanks to area American Legions, Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations, the Tomah Department of Veterans Affairs and private companies, they were able to have a delicious meal at the La Crescent Area Event Center.

This is a rare opportunity for the military members and their families to come together.

“Especially throughout a deployment, we as Army soldiers, we’re together, but our families are still apart. This is one time to put a face to a name, get together and get to know each other because they’re going through the same thing,” said Myke Sampayo, commander of the 327th Engineer Company.

While the 327th Engineer Company is based in Onalaska, the soldiers come from all over the United States. That includes as far away as Texas, North Carolina and Florida.
