Area veteran receives large honor after 65 years

A veteran from our area receives a large honor Friday.

Ray Anderson received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star this morning at the VFW in La Crosse.

Anderson was wounded while serving in the Army during the Korean War 65 years ago, but never received those medals when he was discharged.

His son wrote a letter to US Representative Ron Kind who was able to get the paperwork processed so Anderson could finally receive the medal he earned.

Anderson says it’s an honor he never expected.

“I’d like to thank everyone again. It’s wonderful I could get this after all these years. And a lot of the veterans that ain’t got them, I hope they just keep trying to get them, too,” says Veteran Ray Anderson.

“One of the great honors that I get to do as Representative of this congressional district is what we’re doing here today, and that’s to honor and give thanks to our veterans, especially those that don’t get all the medals and awards that they earn and they deserve by the time they were discharged,” says Rep. Ron Kind.

Congressman Kind says there are many veterans like Anderson who were never awarded the medals they deserve.

If you know of a veteran in that situation you’re encouraged to contact Congressman Kind’s office.
