Area students help put out a bad habit in Powell Park

Area students are reminding people that cigarettes are not only bad for your health, but the environment.

Students from 7 Rivers Community High School in La Crosse spent the day picking up cigarette butts at Powell Park.

In place of each cigarette butt collected a red flag marks the spot, to show just how much litter smoking can leave behind.

Cigarette butts are not biodegradable and can take up to 10 years to degrade.
