Area schools dealing with substitute teacher shortage

A shortage of substitute teachers is causing problems for area schools.

Currently, the La Crosse School District has a little more than 300 substitutes to cover all positions for the district, ranging from lunch room cooks to office administrators. Only about 150 are qualified to substitute teach and many times, those substitutes are subbing other communities as well.

While the district is in need of subs, administrators say they’re not going to hire just anybody.

“Well our kids are too important to just put anyone in front of them, and so not only would they need to apply, but we would do all of our customary back ground checks, references making sure they’re fully credentials and licensable through the state of Wisconsin,” said Steve Salerno, associate superintendent of human resources.
