Area food service staff take a lesson in food safety

With the start of school just the week away, it’s not just teachers getting ready for the first day.

Food Service staff from all across the area took part in an in-service training day at West Salem High School Thursday. The day includes key note speakers and workshops on topics like portion control, breakfast regulations, and food safety.

Nutrition specialists say the training helps prevent the 48 million foodborne illnesses from entering local lunchrooms.

“We’re constantly going through making sure that the food is to the right temperature, that we’ve sanitized everything, that we’ve double washed, and double checked to make sure that what we’re putting out there is safe for the kids to eat,” said Kerri Feyen, nutrition services director for West Salem School District.

Around 300 people took part in the training.
