Area fire departments hope to ‘Keep the Wreath Green’

Campaign calls attention to holiday fire safety

With the holiday season now here, the risk of fires goes up.

A number of local fire departments are once again holding their annual “Keep the Wreath Green” campaign.

Fire departments from La Crosse, Onalaska, Campbell and La Crescent will hang wreaths decorated with green Christmas lights at their stations this year.

Every time there’s a structure fire, the responding department will replace a green bulb with a red one.

There are many things that can cause a fire during the holiday season, but firefighters say leaving your stove unattended is one of the biggest causes.

“People get side tracked, especially with holiday events going on, people are visiting.” said Lt. Steven Cash of the La Crosse Fire Department. “You want to make sure you’re paying attention to what you’re cooking and that you don’t walk away from it and forget about what you’re doing.”

The “Keep the Wreath Green” campaign will end on January 1st.
