What to do if your bunion becomes cumbersome

Some of the main symptoms include pain, swelling, and stiffness in the foot

LA CROSSE, Wis (WKBT) – Bunions – we may not like to talk about them, but what are they, and how can you deal with them?

A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe.

In most cases, bunions are passed down through genetics, but they can also appear due to some medical conditions like gout, as well as injuries to the foot.

Some of the main symptoms include pain, swelling, and stiffness in the foot.

Bunions are more common in women but can affect anyone, even young people.

While bunions may not have a negative effect on everyone’s life, surgery is often a remedy when it does become cumbersome.

And if it does, you may be covered.

“The reason someone is having surgery is usually because of the symptoms that they have. So insurance does cover bunion surgery for folks that are having symptoms associated with their bunion,” said Dr. Brad Abicht, a Foot and Ankle Surgeon at Gundersen Health Systems.
