Aquinas Baseball rallies to reach sectional final

Aquinas Baseball rallied through a rocky sixth inning to emerge from Tuesday’s WIAA Division 3 sectional semifinal with a 4-3 win over Elk Mound.

Aquinas led 2-0 entering the sixth inning when starting pitcher Kahler Key was replaced with Will Deets, in order to preserve Key’s remaining pitch count for a possible sectional final start.

Deets started shaky, loading the bases with no outs and then walking in a run to make it a 2-1 Aquinas lead. Deets then recovered to induce ground ball outs, but those groundouts allowed Elk Mound to take a 3-2 lead.

Aquinas responded in the bottom of the frame. Chris Wilson started the inning with a single to right field. A sac bunt and groundout got him to third, and with two outs, Calvin Hargrove legged out a chopper to shallow third. The throw from the third baseman skipped past the first baseman, allowing Hargrove to take second.

Soon after with runners on first and second, Kole Keppel took a 3-2 pitch for ball four. Aquinas had sent the runners in motion before the pitch, and even though the bases were awarded thanks to the walk, the Elk Mound catcher fired over to third base. The throw got away from the third baseman, allowing Hargrove to score the go-ahead run.

Eddie Peters induced a 6-4-3 double play to escape a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh to finish off the win.
