Another Mild Day For Early January

Chance of light snow Friday afternoon & night

Thursday’s High: 42F / Tonight’s Low: 26F – Last Updated Thursday, January 2, 2020 at 10:45 AM…

It’s not nearly as cold this morning with temps in the 30s, even some low 40s far south. This is quite a change from the single digits and teens we saw early Wednesday morning. A weak disturbance brought a brief period of light rain showers or sprinkles to many areas overnight and early this morning, perhaps flurries north. As a result, watch out for isolated slippery spots on some of the roads and sidewalks this morning… especially in areas where the pavement is shaded during the day. Also, temps were closer to freezing earlier this morning in northern and eastern parts of the viewing area, so slick spots will be more likely in these areas.

Otherwise, expect some sunshine this morning… then clouds will increase across the area as the day progresses. It will be mild again (for early January) with highs in the mid 30s (north) to mid 40s (south). My forecast high for La Crosse is 42F.

Mostly cloudy tonight. Lows will mainly be in the 20s. Cloudy and colder Friday. A clipper-type disturbance will bring a chance of light snow, especially during the afternoon and into Friday night. Snow accumulations look to be on the light side, perhaps around 1″ to 1.5″ in some areas. Of course, it doesn’t take much snow to cause slippery travel… so keep that in mind for the Friday evening commute. Highs Friday will be in the low 30s.

Potential Snowfall Friday Afternoon & Night

Looking Ahead… Dry, but a bit colder Saturday with highs in the 25-30F range… wtih mostly to partly cloudy skies. Slight chance of light snow showers or flurries Sunday with a weak disturbance. Highs will warm back into the mid-upper 30s.

Mostly cloudy Monday with highs cooling back into the mid-upper 20s. Another weak disturbance could cause more light snow showers or flurries Tuesday with colder highs in the upper teens to low 20s.

Partly sunny and seasonably chilly Wednesday with highs in the mid-upper 20s. Chance of snow or rain/snow mix next Thursday with highs in the mid-upper 30s. Slight chance of lingering snow showers or flurries Friday with highs in the upper 20s.

Have a great Thursday! -Bill Graul
