Ankeny-based Iowa Guard members heading home
ANKENY, Iowa (AP) — A welcome-home ceremony is being prepared at Ankeny Airport for about 10 Iowa National Guard members.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday for the members of Detachment 34, Operational Support Airlift Command.
The unit is based at the airport and flies C-12 fixed-wing aircraft. Its primary mission is carrying personnel and supplies.
After mobilization last June, the soldiers got extra training at Fort Benning, Ga., before heading overseas.
The Guard says that while the unit was deployed, it flew more than 1,500 passengers and 100,000 pounds of cargo to spots in Afghanistan, Iraq, and 15 other countries.
