Alleged shoplifting leads to high speed chase

LA CROSSE, Wis. –A Pennsylvania man is arrested after leading officers on a high speed chase on I-90.

It all started Saturday afternoon when 33-year-old Michael Witwer of Greencastle, PA allegedly shoplifted at the Love’s truck stop in Oakdale.

According to police, when Witwer was confronted he brandished a knife and threatened the store manager.

A trooper with the Wisconsin State Patrol later spotted Witwer’s vehicle traveling westbound on I-90 about 4:30 on Saturday. The trooper says Witwer refused to pull over for a traffic stop and made an obscene gesture.

Other squad cars were called in so authorities could perform a rolling roadblock.

They surrounded Witwer’s vehicle and successfully slowed him down. Witwer was taken into custody about 1.5 miles from the Minnesota state line.

Inside Witwer’s vehicle, police found a nine-inch knife.

Witwer is currently being held in the Monroe County jail. Charges are still pending.
