Alive Romanian man declared dead by court

A Romanian man says a court has ruled him dead–even though he remains very much alive.

According to The Associated Press, Constantin Reliu, 63, went to Turkey in 1992 for work and lost contact with his family. Because Reliu remained missing for years, his wife got an official death certificate for him in 2016.

Relius was deported from Turkey this year after Turkish authorities discovered his papers to remain in the country were expired. When he got back to Romania, he learned he had been declared dead.

A judges final ruling Friday said Reliu appealed his status too late to change it.

Reliu reportedly said, “I am officially dead, although I’m alive, I have no income and because I am listed dead, I can’t do anything.”
