ALERT DAY Today Due To Heat
Strong To Possibly Severe Storms Thursday
Wednesday’s Forecast High: 95F / Tonight’s Low: 75F…
Today is an ALERT DAY due to the high heat and humidity expected. Today will mark the 9th day in a row with the high temp reaching 90F or hotter at the La Crosse airport. Today will likely be the hottest of the bunch with highs in the low-mid 90s and heat indices (what it feels like with the high humidity) climbing into the upper 90s to as hot as 105F.
Due to the hot and humid conditions expected, a HEAT ADVISORY is in effect for the entire News 8 viewing area from 11:00 this morning through 7:00 this evening. Be sure to take it easy in the heat today and don’t forget about your pets.
Partly cloudy, mild and muggy tonight with lows in the upper 60s to mid 70s. A cold front will approach from the northwest and could spark some showers and t-storms, especially after midnight. Some of the storms could be strong with gusty winds, small hail and downpours… especially in northwestern parts of the viewing area.
Thursday will be another ALERT DAY, this time due to the chance for strong to possibly severe storms. That cold front will sweep southeast across the area and interact with the very warm and humid air mass in place. The result will be periodic showers and t-storms, with the chance for strong to severe storms mainly during the afternoon and early evening hours. The Storm Prediction Center has the entire viewing area in a LEVEL 2 severe risk, with the possibility of strong winds and hail and perhaps an isolated tornado. Heavy rain will again be possible with any stronger storms, which could lead to urban and street flooding. It won’t be as hot Thursday, but still humid with highs mainly in the upper 80s.
Looking Ahead… Friday should be dry with sunny to partly cloudy skies. Highs will be in the upper 80s. Slight chance of showers and t-storms Saturday, then just isolated t-showers possible Sunday. As of now, I wouldn’t cancel outdoor plans this weekend as there will be plenty of dry time. Highs will mainly be in the 80s, with humidity levels coming down a bit… especially Sunday.
Monday looks dry at this point, with at least slight chances for showers and t-storms Tuesday through Thursday. For now, I’ve got us in the mid-upper 80s for highs… but I will caution you that one longer range model wants to push highs back into the low 90s on at least a couple days next week. Stay tuned for updates!
In the meantime, stay cool today and have a good Wednesday! -Bill Graul
