ALERT DAY For Heat Today & Severe Storms This Evening
Not As Hot & Humid Tomorrow
Tuesday’s Forecast High: 95F / Tonight’s Low: 66F…
ALERT DAY today through this evening… for two reasons. First, we are going to see our hottest day so far this year with highs in the low-mid 90s for most. In fact the record high of 93F (1934) in La Crosse could fall this afternoon as I’m forecasting a high of 95F. Humidity will be high as well, causing heat indices (what it feels like) in the 100-105F range this afternoon. Please take it easy in this heat today and drink plenty of water. Don’t forget about your pets and livestock as well.
The second reason for the ALERT DAY is the chance for strong to severe storms later this afternoon into part of tonight, thanks to a cold front running into the hot and humid air mass that will be in place. As of Tuesday morning, the local timing looks to be from about 5PM to midnight. The main threats will likely be strong winds and large hail, but isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out. I’m not overly concerned with flash flooding since the storms will likely be progressive, but the storms could produce torrential downpours that could cause urban and street flooding… and rises on water levels of smaller creeks, streams and rivers.
The storms should shift south/east and out of our viewing area by about 2 or 3AM. Lows tonight will drop into the mid 60s. Wednesday will be mostly sunny and not as hot… but still warm with highs in the mid 80s. Humidity will be lower tomorrow as well.
Looking Ahead… Chance of showers and t-storms returns for Thursday, perhaps lingering into Friday morning as well. Temps will remain warm with highs in the low-mid 80s. Temps will cool a little for the weekend with highs closer to 80F. Expect a dry Saturday, then a chance for scattered showers and t-storms on Sunday.
Temps warm again early next week with highs in the upper 80s to perhaps low 90s on Tuesday. Expect small chances for some hit and miss showers and t-storms. The rain chances could increase a bit toward the middle of the week as a cold front approaches from the north and west. The front should knock highs back closer to 80F on Wednesday.
Have a good Tuesday… but stay cool and be sure to remain extra weather aware this evening. Stay tuned for updates! -Bill Graul
