9-year-old boy in critical care after being pulled from Mississippi River Sunday

Vernon County Sheriff says the boy was under the water for about 30 to 45 minutes

A 9-year-old boy is in critical care after being pulled from the Mississippi River in Blackhawk Park Sunday afternoon.

Around 12:19 p.m., the Vernon County’s Sheriff’s office received a call for a 9-year-old boy who was missing from the beach at Blackhawk Park in De Soto.

Along with police, a number of people who were already on the river in boats helped the family search.

Authorities said the young boy was found in the water just outside of the roped off swimming area by a private search party.

Vernon County’s Sheriff said the boy was under the water for about 30 to 45 minutes.

CPR was administered immediately and paramedics were able to find a pulse before he was taken by ambulance to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. However, authorities said the boy was not able to breathe on his own.

Wheatland, Desoto and Genoa Fire Departments, First Responders, Tri-State Ambulance, Med-Link Air and the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
