5k fun run and walk honors local veterans

A local event has veterans and community members of all ages testing their luck.

The second annual Vets Day Almost 5k fun run and walk took place on Saturday.

But it wasn’t your typical race, because this year the event included a game of poker.

There were five stops along the route where participants could pick up a playing card.

At the finish line, they compared their cards to see who had the best hand.

But participants weren’t “all-in” just for the prize.

“Having that camaraderie piece and doing this fun activity with other veterans and those that support veterans in our community is just a great way to honor those who have served and continue to serve,” said Kari Porter, the director of La Crosse Vets Center.

The YMCA and UW-L Rec Management students helped put this event on, and is also part of Coulee Region Veterans Week.
