5 RiverHawks sign to play college basketball, baseball

Thursday was a momentous day at La Crosse Central today for five senior athletes who decided to college sign letters of intent together.

After earning a silver ball at State in their last Central season together, Devon Fielding, Noah Compan, and Colin Adams are all headed to play college hoops.

Fielding and Adams staying pretty close to home: Winona State for Fielding, Viterbo for Adams. Compan will play just two and a half hours away at the JUCO program North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, Iowa.

For Central’s top three scorers, it’s only fitting to sign together.

“It was my dream to always become a college athlete,” said Compan. “Sharing the moment with Devon and Colin and Adam.”

“I played with those guys since like fifth, sixth grade, so seeing all of it happen on the same day–it’s amazing,” said Fielding.

“It was pretty exciting,” Adams said. “I was kind of nervous about everything, but once I signed, it was fun. I’m just glad I got to do it with them, because they’ve always been there for me, and I’ve always been there for them.”

Adam Olson, who also played on that State basketball team, is better known for being Central Baseball’s ace pitcher. The senior has tossed a no-hitter for the RiverHawks this season, and he and third baseman Hunter Hess will play locally for Viterbo Baseball.

“I decided I wanted to play [in college] later in my high school career, so options weren’t big, but I wanted to go to Viterbo since I was little,” said Hess.

“I’ve played with Hunter since we were little,” Olson said, “so it’s nice to see he’s coming to the same place as I am.”
