2016 Football Preview: Spring Grove Lions
The Alex Folz era begins at quarterback
SPRING GROVE, Min. (WKBT) — After leading Spring Grove back to a fourth consecutive Section 1 9-man championship game, Chase Grinde is on the move. The Lions senior leader will line up at wide receiver this fall, handing the reigns at quarterback to the former Punt, Pass and Kick competition national champion Alex Folz.
“He is very mobile,” Lions senior Jordan Jaster said. “He is not afraid to step up for a challenge from stepping from running back to wide receiver. He is my best friend also so I am going to protect him and he is going to make plays.”
The plan for Folz and the Lions is to earn another shot at arch nemesis Grand Meadow and end a four-year section championship drought. Payback is a priority considering each of the Lions’ scarce seven defeats since 2012 have come at the hands of Grand Meadow.
Despite bringing back a team with less experience on paper than in 2015, Grinde sees signs at camp that point to big results this fall.
“I think we are just as talented, or even more so, than last year,” Grinde said. “I think we have an opportunity to be even better this season, so I think they can expect just a classy, well-prepared team.”
The Lions open the season Friday, Sept. 2 against Lyle/Pacelli.
