2016 Football Preview: Eleva-Strum Cardinals
STRUM, Wis. (WKBT) — A decade removed from its own football state title in school history, Eleva-Strum eyes a return to Madison.
The runner-up last season in the Dairyland faces a few big holes on paper. The Cardinals lost three first-team all-conference players, most notably the Dairyland offensive player of the year running back Quinn Olson.
“We have 30 juniors and seniors right now,” Hanson said. “We have some sophomores that are going to be challenging for some playing time as well, but we have a nice divide with so many upperclassmen it allows the younger guys to develop at the JV level before they have to be thrown into the fire. “
For the seniors, there is plenty of chatter around the 10-year state title anniversary and chasing down that historic Cardinals squad is a goal the entire group takes out the field this fall in Strum.
“We were all in third grade, I think when the team went to state,” senior quarterback Jedediah Lorenz said. “It was just so cool seeing all of those guys and how far they made it. It’s our dream to be like them and do what they did.”
The Cardinals open the season Thursday at Colfax.
