Jennifer is proud to say she is the newsroom veteran at WKBT. She grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and fell in love with journalism after a high school job shadow at a local TV station.
She graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa in 1997 and started at News 8 shortly after that as a general assignment reporter. Jennifer is on her 11th year anchoring News 8 this morning. She’s also the reporter behind our Emmy award winning 'In Search Of…' series.
In October, 2012, Jennifer made international news when she addressed a viewer e-mail on air that called her a bad role model because of her weight. Her editorial went viral and has motivated students and adults to stand up to bullies and be kinder to one another.
The newsroom teases me that I like anything a tween or teenager loves. (Those Jonas brothers are amazing!) However, my favorite type of music is...showtunes baby!
The Twilight Series. Seriously. Stop laughing.
My best day at News 8 was?
The day I went to cover a story and met a new reporter from the competing station who later became my husband.
Favorite way to spend a day off?
What sports team are you a big fan of?
The Chicago White Sox. I grew up watching them with my dad and was able to attend games 1 and 2 of the 2005 World Series when they brought home the championship.
King Crab Legs. Or anything with chocolate.
What do you like about your job?
There are so many things. I like that I anchor a show that is more laid back and can allow for more personality and fun to happen. I really like that I am the feature reporter and can shine the spotlight on the 'good' news stories in our community. (by the way…if you have an idea, send it to me at email@example.com)
Do you have a hobby or collect anything special to you?
I have a couple of hobbies. I really like photography. I have enjoyed photographing my children and family and friends over the years. I am also a big scrapbooker. I grew up a jock and still like to play tennis and softball and volleyball.
Jennifer is married to News 8 six and ten anchor Mike Thompson. They have three girls together: Katelin, Finley and Quinn.
