Flooding closes several Iowa highways, state says
Flooding has forced the Iowa Transportation Department to close several highways.
Des Moines television station KCCI reported Thursday that U.S. Highway 34 is closed in both directions where it meets U.S. Highway 65 west of Chariton in south-central Iowa. Portions of U.S. Highway 65 also are closed in that area.
Iowa Highway 5 is closed south of Knoxville, near Attica, and Iowa Highway 92 is closed just west of Oskaloosa.
The station says radar readings show the latest storms have dropped between 5 and 6 inches of rain across southern Iowa.
Flash flooding has been reported in other areas of Iowa. In the eastern Iowa city of Solon, some residents turned out to fill sandbags for protecting the city's sewage plant.
