Green Bay Packers kick and punt returner Desmond Howard became the first special teams player ever to be named Super Bowl MVP when he ran for a total of 154 kickoff return yards, and also recorded a Super Bowl record 90 punt return yards, in the Packers' 35-21 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI on Jan. 26, 1997. Howard tied Super Bowl records with his total return yards and combined net yards gained (both 244 yards), which included an also Super Bowl record 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
