For the office, keep accessories and makeup to a minimum. Some industries, such as fashion or beauty, may allow for more experimentation with trendy looks, but most require a more sophisticated approach.

Avoid jewelry that is overly loud (physically or visually), and (unless you moonlight as a clown) keep your makeup subtle and classy. When it comes to makeup for the workplace, think "old Hollywood glam" at the very most and never ever venture into punk rock for the office.

If you want to look appropriate and trendy, make sure your accessories are not only sophisticated but also in season.

Finally, take some advice from fashion icon Coco Chanel and "before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off."

Sure, modern fashion trends have made it acceptable to wear a lacy camisole under your blazer, but anything too revealing should never be worn in the workplace.

Just because Erin Brockovich pulled it off doesn't mean you should give it a try. Keeping your bits covered isn't just about making your office mates more comfortable; it can also potentially ward off unwanted advances. (And who has time for sexual harassment suits these days?)

Most important, by dressing tastefully, you're adopting a more professional image and may be better positioned for a raise or promotion. Of course, this doesn't mean that you have to dress for work from your grandmother's closet; just beware of showing too much skin at the office.
